Fanshawe's story began in 1967. Today, it is one of Ontario's largest colleges offering diploma, degree, certificate and apprenticeship programs to 43,000 students each year.

Working behind the scenes as a technician supporting Fanshawe’s Theatre Arts program, Alina Subrt helps bring stories to life on stage. Inspired by a student performance exploring the impact poverty has on the local community, Alina has taken on a leading role in a simple act of kindness by handing out homemade soup to the most vulnerable in downtown London.

“I cried every day throughout the rehearsal process because poverty for me was really close to home,” she says of her childhood in west Toronto. “It was always something that I feared.”

Determined to make a difference, she posted a note at work in mid-December asking that people donate their old travel mugs for the cause. The response has been overwhelming.

On most days, Alina sets out from Fanshawe’s Centre for Digital and Performance Arts and spends her lunch walking around the downtown core with two mugs of hot soup – either turkey and beans or chicken and rice – looking for people in need. “Some days it’s difficult to find someone to approach, which is awesome because it means they’ve found somewhere to go,” she says. Most days she returns to work empty handed.

While she acknowledges the responses she has received have been varied, her offer of kindness has moved some recipients to tears. Alina plans to continue making a difference one cup of soup at a time, hoping to inspire others to take a moment every day to help someone in need. “There are lots of ways to help, whether it’s offering food, a hot coffee or simply making a point to look directly into their eyes, smile and say hello,” she says. “It can make a big difference.”

Alina’s (really simple, up for interpretation) Chicken and Rice Soup Recipe

This recipe is subject to things you have in your fridge at the time. It's how my mother taught me how to cook, “whatever the garden gives” or in this case “whatever the fridge gives.” Please feel free to substitute ingredients or add things as you have them available to you.

Ingredients:
- Chicken Drumsticks (In other cases I have used bones from a whole chicken, or turkey with meat on them)
- 1 cup of chopped celery
- 1 cup chopped carrots
- Dash of salt and pepper
- 1 ½ cup rice (in other cases I have used dried bean mix, noodles or chopped potatoes)
- I clove of garlic (minced)
- Any spices you would like to add (I sometimes use thyme, basil, or rosemary)

Method:
1. In large pot of water add drumsticks, salt, pepper, garlic and other spices and bring to boil.
2. Chop all vegetables and set aside.
3. Reduce heat to medium and let boil for approximately 45 minutes, then add vegetables and top up water.
4. Let boil for 15 minutes, then remove drumsticks to de-bone.
5. Add meat back to soup and let simmer for 25-30 minutes adding water as necessary.
6. Remove from heat, taste it and add salt/pepper to taste.
