Alina: A story of community
I work for the Theatre Arts Program CDPA. Theatre is the study of the human experience, the sharing of stories to open hearts, minds and give insight into the world around us.
I worked on a show in which our students researched poverty, what it meant to them, and how it affects London. It inspired me; we all have a story, and can help each other.
I decided I wanted to give hot soup to the people I see daily that may not get a meal. I asked for help. I posted a note at work and on Facebook, asking for old travel mugs so that I could get the soup out, still hot. What I got, was the best Christmas present I could imagine. I got 2 boxes of mugs, 2 bags of apples, 3 boxes of fleece lined jackets and waterproof windbreakers. I couldn't believe the generosity! I went out and still had so much left over that I bring a package with me to work daily to give out. Suddenly strangers joined me; giving their sandwiches and winter coats. I want to continue doing this and hope to inspire others to take a moment everyday, help someone in need with food, coffee, or simply to look directly in the eyes, smile and say hello. We are all in this together.
