Kelly-Rose: A story of perseverance
Have you ever met someone with a brain injury? A surprising 50,000 Canadians sustain brain injuries each year! Now what business do I have talking about brain injuries, well fact is I have suffered from a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury for about 3 years now.
During the winter of 2012, I was half way through my senior year at Catholic Central here in London. I decided to hit up Bolar Mountain to snowboard and was ready for my run, only this time was different…I fell, hit my head, and broke my collar bone. Initially we didn’t catch the brain injury; but about a month later my physiotherapist did. They told me I wouldn’t graduate that year, but… I persevered and I did. They said I couldn’t go to university the following year, but… I worked hard and I did. Although I didn’t find my fit at Western University, I am about to start my second program here at Fanshawe College; and I have finally come to terms that I may need help through school which brought me to finally sign up to be a student with a disability, which I hadn’t done previous years.
My wish for future students is to get help if you need it, make the best of everything and if someone says no, show them anything is possible and of course love life!
