Melissa: A story of struggle and success
I am 31 years old and had a child at 20, married at 21 and had another child at 22. I became a single mother of two at 23. My mother passed away suddenly and left behind my 13 year old sister. Without hesitation I adopted my sister. I was 28 years old and had been out of school for 10 years. College had been something I never had the confidence to attempt after many failed attempts of trying to get my high school diploma. But I applied and got accepted into the PSW program. After a very challenging year I was finally a college graduate!!! Unbelievable!!! I was a PSW at a private nursing home on a dementia ward for two years. I wasn't fulfilled in my career choice and wanted to upgrade. I then proceeded to apply for EMT. A very exciting and challenging field at times. I completed the program and quickly found employment my first month after graduating. I liked working in health care but I also liked working in communications, and somehow wanted to combine the two careers. I then decided to apply for the Paramedic program and the Fire Fighter program. My interest in health care and emergency services led me to this decision. My family has always been my backbone and the reason I have accomplished so much.
